£2,500 "Golden Hello" Wage Subsidy for Employers to Recruit 16 - 18 Year Old Apprentices

RWP Training Limited are delighted to be able to offer local businesses the opportunity to access a new grant to help employers recruit young people aged 16 - 17 onto their apprenticeship programmes.  RWP are currently interested in hearing from local businesses who are interested in recruiting young staff on Customer Service, Administration, IT, Hairdressing and Child Care.

Over the next ten weeks the National Apprenticeship Service will provide up to 5,000 Apprenticeship Grants throughout England and Wales for Employers of 16 and 17 year olds (AGE 16 and 17). The grant of £2,500 is to enable employers to offer 5,000 new Apprenticeship places and take on an unemployed 16 or 17 year old apprentice immediately. The £2,500 grant is in addition to the costs of training which are already met by the National Apprenticeship Service.

Last year, despite tough labour market conditions, over 70,000 16 and 17 year olds started an Apprenticeship. Despite this there are still many more young people who want to learn whilst they are in work and we are determined to make sure that the opportunities are there for them to do so.

We particularly want to support small and medium sized employers who are interested in employing an apprentice for this first time, or who want to employ an additional apprentice over their traditional level of recruitment. In exceptional circumstances, where they can demonstrate that they are overtraining to support small employers in their supply chain or the wider sector, larger employers could be supported.

Our aim is to support employers to offer new and additional places in support of young people. Therefore we are targeting those employers who would not otherwise have been in a position to recruit an apprentice at this point in time or who are able to offer more Apprenticeship places than they would otherwise have done.

AGE 16 and 17 is available now. It is a short-term, time-limited, measure and is available immediately for employers who are able to offer a job opportunity to a young person. The AGE 16 and 17 grant is only available until the end of March.

RWP Training Limited and other local training providers are being encouraged to identify employers they have worked with – or previously contacted – who might benefit from this additional support.

Vacancies will be able to be advertised through Apprenticeship vacancies – our online service that matches candidates interested in an Apprenticeship with employers offering them.

Places are very limited and will be available on a first come first served basis. If your business is interested in recruiting a young person aged 16 - 17 onto an apprenticeship programme, call Louise at RWP Training Limited today on 01228 593446 or visit our web site for more details.

Growing Employer interest in Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a work-based training programme which leads to national recognised qualifications and can be used to train both new and existing employees. Apprenticeship funding received from the Learning and Skills Council enables us to offer FREE TRAINING to your apprentices. The size of the funding contribution varies depending on your sector and the age of the candidate. If the apprentice is aged 16–18, we will receive 100 % of the cost of the training; if they are 19+, we will receive up to 50 %.

As the employer, you must give your apprentices an induction into their role and provide on-the-job training. The majority of the training is at your premises with the rest being provided in our training centre in Carlisle. An apprentice should earn a minimum of £95 per week. You are also responsible for paying your apprentices’ wages and they are exempt of the minimum wage until they have been in training for 12 months after their 19th birthday.

In a recent survey, the majority of employers said that Apprenticeships helped them to improve productivity and to be more competitive. They also said that training apprentices is more cost effective than hiring skilled staff, leading to lower overall training and recruitment costs.

Employers in the survey said they relied on their Apprenticeship programmes to provide the skilled workers they need for the future as apprenticeships deliver skills designed around your business needs. They also help you develop the specialist skills you need to keep pace with the latest technology and working practices in your sector.

In any form of recruitment it is important to recruit the right individuals for the right jobs right from the start. Apprentices tend to be eager, highly motivated, flexible and loyal to the company that invested in them. Remember, an apprentice is with you because they want to be – they have made an active choice to learn on the job and a commitment to a specific career.

59% of businesses report that training apprentices is more cost-effective than hiring skilled staff, with 59% believing that apprenticeships lead to lower overall training costs and 53% feeling that they reduce recruitment costs.

For help and advice with the recruitment and selection of apprentices telephone Louise Benson on 01228 593446 or email l.benson@rwp.co.uk

Child Care Apprenticeships vacancies go unfilled.

Since the launch of our Child Care Apprenticeship programme earlier this year, we have received significant interest for local child care employers willing to offer young people a work placement and the opportunity to train as a nursery assistant. Unfortunately, for what ever reason, there has been a lack of interest from young people interested in undertaking a child care apprenticeship and many of these current positions are unfilled.  RWP are urgently seeking applications from young people wishing to start a career in child care and undertake a Child Care Apprenticeship. Currently, RWP have over 25 vacancies in child care with nurseries in Carlisle, Wigton, Penrith and throughout West Cumbria. Young people aged 16 – 19 interested in applying should either contact Louise Benson on 01228 593446 for an informal chat or apply on line through our web site.

RWP APPRENTICES WIN PRESTIGIOUS COUNTY EXCELLENCE AWARDS

Two young learners undertaking their training with Carlisle based training company RWP Training Limited beat off competition from over 3000 learners on Apprenticeship programmes with Colleges and other training companies throughout Cumbria to scoop the trophies for Top Apprentice and Top Advanced Apprentice in the 2009 LSC Excellence in Cumbria Awards which took place at a glitzy awards ceremony held at Rheged last night.

Rebecca Alderson, from Carlisle is employed by Cumbria County Council Learning Support Service and works as a Teaching Assistant Apprentice at Caldew School. Rebecca works with children with learning difficulties providing one to one support and care in their classroom. She started her apprenticeship with RWP Training last September and is working towards a Level 2 NVQ Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools. Rebecca has overcome many barriers to learning herself. Due to her inability to cope under pressure, she did not achieve as well at school as many of her peers. She approached RWP with the encouragement and support of her School Mentor, Chris Allason and was offered an apprenticeship as a teaching assistant, a career she has always dreamed of but never thought she would achieve. Nina Blenkinship, her Tutor at RWP said "Rebecca has shown tremendous commitment and dedication to her apprenticeship. She has made excellent progress and I am delighted that she has been recognised for the efforts she has put into the programme.

Katie Jones, from Wigton, employed at Caldew School started on at Apprenticeship at RWP in September 2007. She achieved this last year and progressed onto an Advanced Apprenticeship with RWP. Katie works as a Teaching Assistant responsible for supporting a group of Polish children who attend the School. In addition to her apprenticeship qualifications, Katie took it upon herself to learn Polish so she could provide help and support to the pupils and interpret every lesson the pupils attend. Andy Abernethy, Headteacher of Caldew School is delighted with the result and has commented both apprentices are worthy winners.

Moira Swann, Corporate Director of Children's Services at Cumbria County Council has already sent a letter of congratulations to both winners and is delighted with the result.

RWP Training Limited only started delivering the Teaching Assistant Apprenticeship in September 2007. They have had an excellent track record of winners in the Excellence in Cumbria Awards since their inception by the LSC in 1999. Richard Polyblank, Chief Executive or RWP Training said, winning both the Apprenticeship Award and the Advanced Apprenticeship is a tremendous achievement and I am delighted we have achieved this accolade in the final year of the LSC.

RWP Learner Wins Excellence in Cumbria County Finals

RWP Training Limited congratulate Rebecca Murray on winning the Youth Achievement Award at the annual Excellence in Cumbria County Finals held at the Castle Green Hotel on Thursday 29 March 2007. Rebecca lives in Brampton and is 19.

She always wanted to be a hairstylist and joined the RWP Vocational Programme when she was 14 as part of a partnership programme with William Howard School. She attended RWP one day a week whilst still in full time education. She then commenced an Apprenticeship when she left school at 16 and whilst training for her NVQ Level 2, Rebecca became pregnant. During that time her parents home in Carlisle got flooded and she had to move twice in one month. However, she continued with her training until her daughter was born. When her daughter was 3 months old, Rebecca went back to work full-time to finish her Apprenticeship. This meant a lot of hard work and dedication, but she was determined to prove that it could be done. Her employer at Hairport, Brampton is delighted with her progress and the support she has received from RWP.

Rebecca recently completed her Apprenticeship ahead of schedule, passed her driving test and progressed onto an Advanced Apprenticeship. Rebecca believes that she has been able to set up a better life for herself and her daughter. Richard Polyblank, Chief Executive of RWP said, "Rebecca is a great example of someone who has shown that having a positive attitude and determination, nothing can stand in the way of fulfilling ones dreams".
