Apprenticeships
Frequently Asked Questions
Am I eligible for a Apprenticeship?
There are no set entry requirements to do a Apprenticeship. You just need to be living in England, aged 16 - 24 and not taking part in full-time education.
Are there different types of Apprenticeships?
There are two different levels:
-
Apprenticeship
As an Apprentice, you'll have a full-time job and a wage. An Apprenticeship takes at least 18 months to complete and leads to NVQ Level 2 and a Technical Certificate. The work is mainly practical: you'll develop technical skills and gain valuable work experience. There is also the opportunity to progress to an Advanced Apprenticeship. -
Advanced Apprenticeship
As an Advanced Apprentice, you'll be in full-time employment with an appropriate wage, aiming for a technical, supervisory or junior management role. The training, which usually lasts at least 24 months, leads to NVQ Level 3 and a Technical Certificate. For many, an Advanced Apprenticeship is a stepping stone to higher education qualifications or a vocational degree.
How long does a Apprenticeship take?
Foundation Apprenticeships usually take at least 18 months to complete, and Advanced Apprenticeships last at least two years. The actual time they take depends on the Apprenticeship you're completing. See our individual factsheets for exact details.
How do Apprenticeships work?
Your employer pays your wages and gives you on-the-job training which allows you to achieve National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). You'll spend time in our training centre, gaining key skills that'll be useful in the job market - like working in teams, problem-solving, communication and using new technology. In addition, you'll also study for a Technical Certificate, which will give you further knowledge and understanding of your job.
How much do I get paid?
You're guaranteed a basic wage of at least £65/week at 16 which rises to £75/week at 17 years old. At 18 years old you receive at least the minimum wage (£3.80/hour) after your first year in training. Most of our apprentices receive significantly more than this.
Do I get holidays?
You'll get at least 1.5 days' paid holiday for every month of your training. On top of that you'll get bank holidays.
What qualifications do I get when I've finished my Apprenticeship?
You'll get a package of qualifications when you finish your Apprenticeship - a National Vocational Qualification, a Technical Certificate like a BTEC National Diploma or a City & Guilds Progression Award, and key skills qualifications. The Apprenticeship leads to an NVQ Level 2 and the Advanced Apprenticeship leads to an NVQ Level 3. The qualifications you gain as an Advanced Apprentice can help you to enter higher education.
How do NVQs relate to other qualifications?
There are five levels of NVQ:
- Level 1 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades D-G
- Level 2 is equivalent to 5 GCSEs at grades A-C
- Level 3 is equivalent to 2 A levels/1 vocational A level
- Level 4/5 is equivalent to HNC, HND and degree level
