Employers' Role
Role of the Employer
Employers, learning providers and apprentices work in partnership. Together you decide how the partnership will work best for you by agreeing:
- which Apprenticeship and level of - an Apprenticeship or an Advanced Apprenticeship - is appropriate for your business and for the young person;
- what training will be carried out under the various elements of the programme
- who will carry out the training - in-house staff or outside training providers.
As an employer your responsibilities include:
- on-the-job training - inducting the apprentice into their role and providing on-the-job training opportunities;
- salary - paying apprentices in full-time employment. You can negotiate a salary that reflects their skills, experience, age, abilities and the going rate for the job;
- recruitment - taking an active part in the recruitment of the apprentice;
- time for learning - giving apprentices enough time and resources for training and assessment commitments; and
- review - contributing to the regular review of the apprentice's progress.
If employing an apprentice is currently inappropriate for your business, you may be able to offer a work placement for a trainee status learner. Fill in the form on this page to find out more.
