Role / Duties:

As an inclusive secondary school, employees are expected to follow a full timetable, supporting the needs of a variety of students in a mainstream setting. Working as part of a large team, communication skills are vital in assisting the students to access a full and varied curriculum.  You will be expected to liaise with the class teachers of the students you support ensuring that the students’ targets are met and follow up with Year Leader as necessary. You will attend Learning Support meetings weekly, and any student concerns will be discussed confidentially. You will be supported in school by your mentor who you will meet with, initially once a week. You will also be expected to participate in safeguarding training and know our school policies.

To work under the instruction/guidance of teaching/senior staff to undertake work/care/ support programmes, to enable access to learning for pupils and to assist the teacher in the management of pupils and the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area.

Support for pupils

·                Supervise and provide particular support for pupils experiencing special educational needs, ensuring their safety and access to learning activities.

·                Assist with the development and implementation of individual education/behaviour plans and personal care programmes.

·                Establish constructive relationships with pupils and interact with them according to individual needs.

·                Promote inclusion and acceptance of all pupils.

·                Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by a teacher.

·                Set challenging and demanding expectations and promote self-esteem and independence.

·                Provide feedback to pupils in relation to progress and achievement under the guidance of the teacher.

Support for teachers

·                Create and maintain a purposeful, supportive and orderly environment, in accordance with lesson plans.

·                Assist with the display of pupils’ work.

·                Use strategies, in liaison with the teacher, to support pupils to achieve learning goals.

·                Assist with the planning of learning activities.

·                Monitor pupils’ responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement/ progress and directed.

·                Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils’ achievement, progress and problems.

·                Promote good pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage pupils to take responsibility for their own behaviour.

Support for the school

· Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, security, confidentiality and data protection.

·                Be aware of and support difference and ensure that pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop.

·                Contribute to the overall work ethos/work/aims of the school.

·                Appreciate and support the role of other professionals and agencies.

·                Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required.

·                Assist with the supervision of pupils out of lesson time including before and after school and at lunchtimes.

·                Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out-of-school activities as required and take responsibility for a group under the supervision of the teacher.

Required Skills / Experience / Personal Qualities:
  • GCSE Maths and English A*-D or 9-4
  • Excellent communication skills

Prospects: Progression on to Advanced Apprenticeship is a possibility for the right candidate.
Training Involved: The RWP Training Apprenticeship in Teaching Assistants will offer you a 12 month programme of work based learning where you will gain the following qualifications:

Days/Hours: Monday to Friday,  8.30am-4.30pm
Other Information: You will be required to undergo a successful DBS check prior to employment.
